Off-roading is practiced on trails and in suitable areas. Traffic restrictions on rural roads are subject to a municipal or prefectural by-law, and must be posted at the entrance to the road: road code sign, ONF barrier, etc.
No off-roading: it’s strictly forbidden to leave the trails, which must generally be at least the width of a car.
Hiking is not a competition. As on the road, excessive speed and lack of control can be dangerous and punishable.
Be courteous to local residents, farmers, foresters and other hikers. Some pedestrians and cyclists seeking peace and quiet may be surprised by your passing. Pass walkers at a slower pace, and stop your engine while riders pass. Ride preferably in small groups. A hello doesn’t spoil anything!
Respect natural areas, private property and crops/vineyards. Crops and vineyards are farmers’ livelihoods, and natural areas are our common property. Respecting them means preserving our business.
Respect paths and their surroundings. Paths are sensitive to erosion and wet conditions. Taking this into account also means respecting the local authorities who are responsible for their upkeep, and maintaining good relations with them.
Drive a clean, compliant and quiet vehicle. Regulations are the same as on the road. You must have a valid driving license. The vehicle registration document must be in order. The vehicle must be insured, registered and fitted with all the equipment required by the Highway Code: lighting, indicators, rear-view mirrors, etc., in compliance with the manufacturer’s standards. Above all, don’t use a “fiddly” exhaust system. No technical or mechanical problem should be known before the start.
Adapt your driving and equipment to the weather conditions. Roads can present extremely precarious grip conditions, depending on the weather. So it’s up to you to equip your vehicle appropriately, and sometimes not at all…
When faced with an ONF barrier, a sign prohibiting motor vehicles in accordance with the highway code, or a sign indicating the private nature of a path, change your itinerary. If you are penalized, you will be indefensible and the fines can be very heavy…
Be well insured. As well as insuring your vehicle, you need “legal protection” cover, so that you can be assisted free of charge by a lawyer in the event of an abusive penalty. By joining Codever, you automatically benefit from this insurance.
